Earlier this week fashion royalty Zandra Rhodes hosted the glittering launch of 'My Favourite Dress' at London's Fashion and Textiles Museum. This fabulously glossy tome was authored by Gity Monsef, Samantha Erin Safer and Robert de Niet and was originally inspired by the equally fabulous 2003 exhibition of the same name. For this book many designers and well known faces in the fashion world have selected and discussed their all-time favourite dresses – garments which have more often than not been worn time and time again, sometimes to a point where they are no longer decent!
So all of this got me thinking about the attachments we've all had with particular dresses. Whether it is indeed a smart yet casual dress that seems ideal for every occasion, a floaty summer dress that you can't resist wearing whenever the sun comes out, or a little black dress that always makes you feel fantastic, we've all had a frock or two that we've worn into oblivion. Having said this, however, a new decade means new things - maybe now is the perfect time to finally let go of our old favourites and go in search of some new ones?
When looking for a dress that will look great for years to come and isn't going to date quickly, classic designer pieces are the only way to go. Bottega Veneta's boned-waist black dress, Jill Sander's cap sleeve cotton jersey dress, Michael Kors one-shoulder jersey dress and BCBGMAXAZRIA's black cascade drape shift dress are all great examples of dresses that have the potential to become fast fashion favourites.
