Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Review

Written by Helen Hackwell on Tuesday, 22 April 2014.

Philip Kingsley

It’s not often I’m asked to try out and review beauty products, I’d like to think this is because my beauty regime needs no improvement, but I think it’s more likely that brands prefer to keep their products at a safe distance from amateurs like myself… who knew a handful of damp compost wasn't actually the equivalent of a mud mask. Perhaps then it was fate that intervened when I was asked to review one of the most idiot-proof products available on the market today.

Pampering Time!

Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer is a product that I've heard mentioned time and time again across nearly every social media platform. It’s the world’s first pre-shampoo conditioning treatment and delivers a rush of moisture to the hair’s cuticle. It’s unusual in that you apply it before shampooing your hair, something that was an entirely new concept to me, but in fact it’s just one of the many unique features of this product.

Before Applying

I decided to test it out just before the bank holiday weekend so I could report back on the condition of my hair immediately afterwards and at the end of several days spent visiting family and meandering around the Lake District. I ran myself a bath (any excuse), gradually relaxed into it and began to soak away my troubles swollen ankles/feet - sob!

Small Amount of Product

After wetting my hair and sectioning it I applied a small amount of Elasticizer to each section from about midway down through to the tips. I have very thick hair so could afford to be more generous than those who have thin hair, but it’s important to concentrate the solution on the mid lengths and ends of your hair as this is where the treatment will be most beneficial.

Sectioning Hair

Once I’d finished working it through the various sections I reviewed the instructions and began to panic as I realised I was required to wear a plastic cap for twenty minutes to allow the formula to work its magic. I was just about to start cursing myself for not nabbing more shower caps from my various hotel stays when I realised that Philip Kingsley had very kindly included one in the box - phew!

Shower Cap Time!

Shower cap adorned, there was nothing left to do but sit back and relax for twenty minutes listening to the dulcet tones of Ugly Betty on Netflix whilst attempting to distract myself from worrying about the ever-increasing size of my ankles.

And Relax!

Twenty minutes later I washed the solution out and then shampooed and conditioned my hair as normal. The first thing I noticed when I’d finished is how ‘light’ my hair felt, normally after I use any kind of leave-in conditioning mask I notice that my hair feels quite heavy immediately after. Perhaps this is one of the main benefits of the fact that you use it before you shampoo, so you don’t end up with hair that feels too laden in product when you rinse it out.

Taking Life as Seriously as Ever!

I styled my hair normally and didn't use any additional products in between. I noticed very quickly that my hair was much more compliant when it came to using the hair dryer to curl small sections, I normally spend quite some time battling with frizz and flyaways, but there was no such trouble this time round. I had to quickly whizz over some of the shorter hairs with my straighteners, one of the benefits (?!) of pregnancy is that less of your hair falls out, but that also means that there’s more work to do in keeping it tidy.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer

Once I was done curling, straightening, smoothing and scrunching I posed for a quick ‘finished result’ selfie… forty photos later I finally took one I was prepared to share with the world.

The Finished Result

Post-Easter weekend I’m also pleased to report that my hair survived the many hours spent in the car as well as the brisk squalls of wind that were being fired across Lake Windermere. I've since washed it a further two times and still notice the difference when I style it, much less breakage and frizz. Philip Kingsley recommend using it weekly, which works for me as I normally try to spend my Sunday evenings relaxing in a bath and avoiding any household related chores. I would definitely advocate this product to anyone who is an avid user of heat-related styling tools and finds that their hair gets very dry or starts to break, please give Elasticizer a go, you will not be disappointed!
